How coaching helps entrepreneurs crush mental barriers

crush mindset barriers with coaching

Andre Agassi was at the top of his game when he suffered a slump and then an injury. He went from being the best player in the world to not even ranking in the top 25. He was frustrated, in his head and close to quitting the sport altogether.

That's when he called on Tony Robbins for help.

Tony Robbins isn't a tennis coach, but he helped Agassi get past the distractions and limiting beliefs holding him back. By helping Agassi visualize goals, recognize his past successes, and focus on a larger purpose,Tony got Agassi into a state of peak performance.

Within four months, Agassi was back to number one.

Agassi learned that tennis was more than trophies or fame. He immersed himself in giving back by serving underprivileged kids. Ultimately, Agassi completed a career Grand Slam and became one of the most admired and respected players of all time.

Athletes aren't the only high performers who struggle with psychological blocks. If you're an entrepreneur, your mental fitness is the component that will either hold you back from success or propel you forward.

Success is 80% psychology and only 20% mechanics.

This is as true for business leaders as it is for athletes. Tony Robbins helped Agassi rebuild the psychology undermining his career, unlocking his joy and potential. An entrepreneur coach can do the same for you, with the same transformational impact.

How coaching for entrepreneurs will transform your business

Coaching is so much more than drawing up strategies and tweaking operations. Quality business and leadership coaches understand that a solid psychological foundation is critical to business success. It's the X-factor that separates average companies from extraordinary ones.

"The chokehold on the growth of any business is always the psychology of the leader."

With the guidance of an experienced coach, you can break that chokehold. You will identify the limiting beliefs that are holding you back, gain an outside perspective on your psychology and business, develop the resilience to overcome obstacles, and connect with a greater purpose that will drive your company vision.

Real leadership is the ability to influence the thoughts, emotions, and actions of others. And that kind of influence doesn't come from force.

Crush limiting beliefs

Andre Agassi was held back by limiting beliefs. He believed that his worth was dependent on winning, that he couldn't choose his life and that he was a fraud. It wasn't until he replaced these limiting beliefs with empowering ones that he was able to break through to success.

We all have beliefs about who we are and what we are capable of. And those beliefs show up in the stories that you tell yourself about what’s possible for you.

Are limiting beliefs like these holding you back?

"I'm a fraud. I don't belong here."

"My worth is dependent on my business success."

"I am not smart enough or capable enough."

"If I ask for help, I'll look weak."

You may not even realize that you are harboring limiting thoughts. That's where a coach can be so valuable. They will help you replace those thoughts with empowering ones.

"I don't need to know everything yet. I am capable of learning and growing."

"Failure is just feedback. Every mistake is a chance to learn."

"I don't have to be the smartest. I am resourceful and determined."

"Asking for help is a strength; it's wisdom to learn from others."

One of the most influential things you can do as a leader is help your teams identify and break through the thoughts holding them back. Once you reframe your limiting beliefs as empowering ones, you are prepared to guide your team to do the same.

Get beyond your blind spots

Everyone has blind spots—thoughts that prevent you from seeing things clearly. Some people are good at seeing the big picture, but miss the important details. Others get so focused on details that they can't see the whole picture. These psychological barriers are particularly challenging because you can't fix what you don't see.

As an entrepreneur, it's hard to have an honest view of your own business. You've invested hundreds of hours and thousands or millions of dollars into your company, making it difficult to detach enough to see your weak points clearly.

But if you want to progress, it's essential to get real and raw about where you are right now. Clarity is power.

An entrepreneur coach will take a close look at your company and identify weak points in your strategy, operations and systems. But just as importantly, a coach will work with you personally to find gaps in your leadership psychology. It might be painful at first, but this kind of executive leadership coaching will take you from an average leader to a truly great one.

Mastering your psychology includes identifying and addressing your blind spots. One of the most powerful questions you can ask yourself is "What else am I missing?" A coach is in the best position to answer that for you. With outside perspective and outside help, those blind spots can become your leadership strengths.

Here are some examples of blind spots a coach can help you turn around:

  • Avoiding difficult conversations
  • Assuming everyone thinks like you
  • Demanding too much control and perfection
  • Modeling chronic busy-ness
  • Fearing vulnerability
  • Resisting feedback

Develop Resilience

It's not a matter of if your business will face times of difficulty, but when. Every company goes through periods of adversity. The difference between the businesses that crumble under pressure and those that come out stronger than before is the mental resilience of their leaders.

Resilience isn't just about bouncing back. It is about bouncing forward with increased clarity, power and purpose.

With the guidance and experience of a professional business coach, you can develop a rock-solid psychology where you approach business challenges as stepping stones to growth. You'll learn how to master your emotional state, reframe adversity, define yourself by your values, build resilience rituals and make growth-minded decisions.

Overcome stress and apathy with purpose

One of the most significant Agassi did was to connect his tennis playing to a greater purpose. Despite his talent and success, trophies and money, Agassi had stopped finding joy in tennis, and it crippled his career.

Andre Agassi's transformation came when he played tennis to benefit underprivileged youth. He founded the Andre Agassi College Preparatory Academy and became an advocate for education and mental health. This purpose drove his desire to work hard, train and become the best in the world again.

Even if your company has a great product, sophisticated systems, a killer strategy and plenty of capital, you won't find fulfillment and ultimate success without a purpose. One of the greatest psychological barriers that leaders face is maintaining drive. Stress and burnout are pervasive. Stressed out employees and leaders are not only unhappy, but also less creative, productive and resilient. The way to overcome this is by bringing meaning back to the work you do.

The most meaningful purposes center on giving because we tend to do more for others than we do for just ourselves. Contribution is a core human need. No company will thrive for long without a mission that goes beyond profits.

Most companies don't fund education or bring clean water to third-world countries. That doesn't mean that giving can't be part of your company identity. A coach can help you articulate a purpose that aligns with your goals and vision. That purpose might be to create a working environment that values employees and promotes growth and learning. It might be to serve your customers better than anyone else in your industry.

Here are some examples of companies driven by a bigger purpose:

  • Warby Parker's mission statement is to "inspire and impact the world with vision, purpose and style."For every pair of eyeglasses sold, they donate one to someone in need.
  • Ben & Jerry's mission is "to make the best possible ice cream in the nicest possible way." By "nicest," Ben & Jerry's means prioritizing corporate accountability through ethical sourcing, environmental sustainability and community involvement.
  • CVS Health's purpose is “Bringing our heart to every moment of your health.” The company removed tobacco from its stores because it didn't align with its purpose of promoting health. After taking an initial hit, they rebounded and thrived because they stuck with their values.

These companies are financially successful not in spite of their dedication to a greater purpose but because of their mission. A purpose promotes company loyalty, productivity and innovation.

Transform yourself to transform your business

While a business coach will certainly help you refine your strategy and fix your systems and processes, the greater impact of coaching is its ability to transform you as a leader.

Quality leadership is what will guide your company in the long term. Your leadership will determine how well you adapt and grow in the face of inevitable changes and challenges. Hiring a coach to develop your leadership psychology is an investment in the long-term success of your business.
